Woods Skipping Mercedes Championships

KAPALUA, Maui– Top-ranking golfer Tiger Woods will the skip the season opening PGA Tour's Mercedes Championships in Kapalua to spend some well-deserved time with his family.
Woods won the Mercedes Championships, which takes place in January, in 1997 and 2000. He says on his web site that he needs a break and some time away from the game.
Woods finished in a tie for 14th in the World Challenge exhibition Dec. 11. He did not say when he will be appearing on the 2006 PGA tour.
The Mercedes Championships will be played on Maui at the Kapalua Plantation Course Jan. 5–8.

Muindi wins Honolulu Marathon

HONOLULU, O‘ahu– The Honolulu Marathon saw participants from around the world Dec. 11 and attracted thousands of spectators in the 33rd running of the annual race.
Jimmy Muindi, 32, of Kenya, won the Marathon for the fifth time. Russian Olesya Nurgalieva, 29, won her first.
This was Muindi's third consecutive victory with a time of 2:12:00.
Mbarak Hussein, 40, a Kenyan who became a United States citizen before the 2004 race, finished second in 2:15:06.
Eric Nzioki, 27, of Kenya, making his Honolulu debut, finished third at 2:16:24.
Nurgalieva, also was making her first appearance, led throughout the race, with a time of 2:30:24. Japan's Eri Hayakawa, 23, finished second at 2:32:59. Alevtina Ivanova, 30, of Russia, took third in 2:38:17.
Muindi earned $20,000, Nurgalieva $17,000 for winning their respective race.


Baby Delivered, Mother On Life Support Dies

HONOLULU, O‘ahu– The baby of a Big Island woman left brain-dead was delivered successfully.
Kara Hughes, a spokeswoman for Queen's Medical Center, told the Honolulu Advertiser that Josiah Darcy Fay was delivered by Caesarean section at 11:50 a.m. Josiah weighed 3 pounds, 5 ounces and was 16.5 inches long.
Josiah's mother, Sarah Fay, had been brain-dead and kept on life support after being severely beaten on Nov. 25 by former boyfriend, Marwann Jackson. Fay died after the birth. She was 34.
Jackson has been charged with second-degree murder, second-degree murder by omission, kidnapping, first-degree sexual assault, second-degree robbery and violation of an order for protection.
The healthy baby boy will be transferred to Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children and remain there for about three weeks before being released to family members who plan to raise the child.

A.G. Tough On Registered Sex Offenders

HONOLULU, O‘ahu– Attorney General Mark Bennett is cracking down on convicted sex offenders who have not complied with Hawai‘i’s new registration law, indicting nine men and warning several hundred others.
If convicted they could serve five years.
Letters were mailed to 274 sex offenders who must register by Jan. 13, 2006.
On the state sex offender web site, www.sexoffenders.hawaii.gov, 344 individuals have been listed.
Bennett urges people with information to call 587-3100.


New Kapa‘a Emergency Room Opens

KAPA‘A, Kaua‘i– A much-needed emergency room opened Dec. 10 at the Samuel Mahelona Memorial Kawaihau Road facility.
Llewellyn Wynne, hospital assistant administrator and clinical operations officer, told the Garden Isle News that six patients utilized the new service within the first two days of opening.
The new facility is a “mid-level” emergency room offering care for non-life threatening injuries and minor illnesses such as sore throats, colds and flu, respiratory infections, asthma attacks, sprains, fractures, deep cuts, severe sunburn and minor burns, migraines, earaches, and eye irritations.


Kihei Man Dies In Motorcycle Crash

KIHEI, Maui– A 30-year-old Maui man died Dec. 18 after crashing his motorcycle on Makena Alanui Road in South Maui.
According to police, the accident occurred at 4:50 p.m. when Joshua K. Feiteira lost control of his 2005 Suzuki GSXR. He was heading north on Makena Alanui near Honoiki Street.
Feiteira was pronounced dead at 5:45 p.m. at Maui Memorial Medical Center. He had been wearing a helmet, however police say that it may not have been properly fastened.
Feiteira is the fifth motorcycle fatality since October.
