SHAME, SHAME
Commentary by J.M. Buck, former Maui Weekly Investigative Journalist
It
is a sad time here on Maui, one of the last two independent newspapers
on the island has sold out to a national publishing corporation.
Since the sale of the Maui Weekly to the Maui News, who in turn
is owned by ultra-conservative Ogden Newspapers, Inc. (ONI), some
of the Maui Weekly journalists who prided themselves on bringing
the people of Maui the “news behind the news” have
intentionally been silenced.
These reporters were not afraid to dig deep into an issue. Joseph
Bean took quite a bit of heat from our state legislators with
his in-depth dissection of the Jones Act, however the goal of
the Maui Weekly was to bring the “real” news to the
public, not just parroting press releases or rehashing the same
stories every other news agency was covering.
I personally covered many controversial issues tirelessly. From
phosphates in the Upcountry water system, police impropriety,
the ice problem and violent crime to most recently questionable
activities regarding the whole junk car ordeal. One thing I that
I can assure the people of Maui is that all articles written prior
to final editing by any hard news reporter for Maui Weekly, including
myself, can be substantiated by irrefutable photographic and black
and white evidence.
The Maui News has done everything they promised they would not
do when they purchased the paper. They promised not to change
the format or content of Maui Weekly, they said they would not
cut writer’s pay, and that they would provide the public
with unbiased reporting. They have reneged on all of these promises,
and reporter’s pay was cut to less than one-third of what
it was, effectively forcing many into looking for better-paying
jobs.
In an e-mail from Mark Vieth, the new general manger of Maui Weekly,
he states, “ A big criticism of the Maui Weekly to date
has been that writers form an opinion , drugs are killing a community,
or an infection is running through Maui Memorial, for example
– and then those opinions are not supported with facts and
statements by reputable sources. I know the difference, and those
kinds of articles are pau in the Maui Weekly”. This from
the editor of a glorified brochure. These statements are so far
off base it is sickening, and an insult to intelligent journalists.
In fact, Vieth had never even read the Maui Weekly prior to four
weeks ago.
The facts are: drugs are harming our community. There are still
toxins in the Upcountry water. If there is a threat of a serious
disease, the people need to be made aware of it. Government officials
should not be allowed to run amok at taxpayer’s expense.
It seems the policy of Maui News/ONI is “don’t make
waves.” Well, someone needs to. And it is the public’s
right to know what is going on in their community. That is the
job of investigative journalists. It is we who dig up the truth,
and get results. It is we who keep those in government honest
(to a certain degree), because we are watching them.
In addition to the Maui News and Maui Weekly, ONI also owns Haleakala
Times, Maui Bulletin and Lahaina News, effectively monopolizing
the news market on Maui. I can promise the people of Maui that
you have not heard the last from me. I will do everything in my
power to see that the truth is somehow brought to you. Because
I am watching. Just give me time.

Another
venue for Maui to get it’s real news. The biased reporting
of the Maui News is a real shame. I know I cannot be the only
person who tells it like it is regarding Arakawa. The Maui News
will print nothing that this Mayor does wrong. If anyone has seen
something against this mayor in the Maui News, please let me know.
It seems he can do nothing wrong. Maui, I know this guy better
than anyone, he was almost my father in law. So don’t believe
all that you hear about him. He is an opportunist and will only
tell you want you want to hear. I know, I helped him win his campaign
for mayor.
