January 5

Your County with Mayor Alan Arakawa

The Thursday, Dec. 29 live broadcast of Maui County Mayor Alan Arakawa’s public access television show, "Your County with Mayor Alan Arakawa," will be re-broadcast on AKAKU Channel 53 on Thursday, Jan. 5 at 7 p.m. and again on Friday, Jan. 6 at 8 a.m.
The Mayor’s guests are County of Maui's Environmental Coordinator Rob Parsons and Stuart Funke-d'Egnuff, Program Manager for Tri-Isle Resource, Conservation & Development Council, Inc.
The hour-long program will discuss will discuss environmental issues including the County of Maui providing interim funds for trucks to provide wastewater pumpout service at the Ma`alaea Small Boat Harbor.

Maui Talks TV

Nik-Hil Productions, in association with Harold William Peltz Entertainment, announces the eighty-fifth edition of MAUI TALKS-TV, a live, public-affairs, call-in talk show, on Akaku: Maui Community Television.
The live broadcast of the Tuesday, Jan. 3 show will be rebroadcast on Tuesday, Jan. 10 at 7 p.m. on Channel 53, and again the following Wednesday morning, Jan. 11 at 7:15 a.m.
MAUI TALKS-TV is a weekly, one-hour Public Affairs talk show, hosted by Nikhilananda, which is broadcast live every other Tuesday evening.  This show is then repeated the following Tuesday evening and again the next Wednesday morning.  During the live taping, members of the community are invited and encouraged to telephone into the show at 873-3430, (888-577-6240 on Molokai and Lanai) and comment upon various issues of the day.

The ABC's of a Business Plan

"The ABC's of a Business Plan" workshop will be presented by Susie Thieman of Maui Economic Opportunity on Wednesday, January 11 from noon to 1 p.m.at the Maui County Business Resource Center (MCBRC) across from IHOP in the Maui Mall. The course will emphasize the reasons for writing a business plan. Participants will receive an outline of the business plan taught by MEO's Core Four Business Plan course. Thieman is the program instructor and has more than 25 years of small business startup and management experience. The course is free of charge, however seating is limited and reservations are suggested. For further information, call the Maui County Business Resource Center at 873-8247. QuickBooks for Small Business Workshop

"QuickBooks for Small Business" offers hands-on computer training for beginners on Wednesday, January 11, from 3 to 6 p.m.at the Maui County Business Resource Center (MCBRC) across from IHOP in the Maui Mall. Sponsored by SCORE (Service Core of Retired Executives) and presented by Richard Kehoe, MBA, CPA, owner and operator of his own accounting and tax firm, the workshop teaches new users how to use "QuickBooks" for their companies: how to record sales, receive payments, prepare invoices and balance the company checkbook. The minimal $49 fee provides a small class setting, personalized tutoring, customized answers and the option to schedule a follow-up appointment at a nominal fee. Mayor's State of the County Address

Mayor Alan Arakawa will deliver his 2006 State of the County Address on Thursday, Jan. 12, at 5:30 p.m. in the Baldwin High School Auditorium, 1650 Kaahumanu Avenue, Wailuku.
Mayor Arakawa will detail his Administration's accomplishments over the past three years, his vision and goals for 2006 and beyond.
The event is open to the public.
As refreshments will be served following the Address, attendees are asked to RSVP by calling 270-7710.

Kiwanis Club of South Maui

Mike Quintana Jr. Of the Central Maui Little League will be guest speaker at the Kiwanis Club of South Maui Friday January 13 at 7:30 a.m.
The Kiwanis Club of South Maui meets at 7:30 a.m. every Friday morning at Stella Blue’s Restaurant in Azeka Shopping Center on South Kihei Road. Plenty of parking, breakfast is available and admission is free.

Volunteer to Remove Non-Native Plants From Haleakala Crater

Volunteer in Haleakala Crater Saturday through Monday, January 14–16, and stay at Kapalaoa Cabin. Participants will hike two days and work one day removing non-native plants. Better Balance, Personally and Professionally

"Better Balance, Personally and Professionally" will be offered Wednesday, January 18 from noon to 1:30 p.m.at the Maui County Business Resource Center (MCBRC) across from IHOP in the Maui Mall. Gain balance by becoming more aware of personal obstacles, professional blocks, and what may be draining your energy. Using Coach U's assessment tool, called "Clean Sweep Program," a self-assessment test focusing on four business categories will be offered: physical environment, well-being, money and relationships. Instructor Susan Kim is a personal and professional life coach with a master's degree in communications. The course is free of charge, however seating is limited and reservations are suggested. Starting a Business in Maui County

"Starting a Business in Maui County " will be presented on Wednesday, January 25 from noon to 1 p.m. at the Maui County Business Resource Center (MCBRC) across from IHOP in the Maui Mall. The free workshop includes a lecture by Small Business Advocate Anna K. Ribucan of the County of Maui Office of Economic Development. This seminar covers general information and requirements for starting a business in Maui County. Handouts, websites and other helpful information included. Family Night Under The Stars

Join award-winning astronomy writer and teacher Harriet Witt and her telescope in experiencing the magic of the night sky in Ma‘alaea Friday, Jan. 27, 7 – 9 p.m.
Learn star names, constellations and the zodiac. Look through a telescope at the rings of Saturn, the rust on Mars, and newly-forming stars. Telling time by the sky and Polynesian celestial navigation will also be covered.
Witt has been teaching astronomy since 1980 and offering astronomy-as-entertainment at Maui resort hotels since 1990, and teaching Making Friends With the Night Sky classes at MCC since 1992.
Dress warmly and bring a flashlight, blanket and mosquito repellent.
$10 each donation for adults, $5 for folks too young to drive.
Limited to 30 people – first come, first served.
WHERE TO MEET: Haycraft Park at the end of Hau'ole St. in Ma‘alaea. Once the group meets there is a 300 foot walk along the beach to the viewing spot. Park on the street outside the lot. Do not park in the parking lot at end, as the gates are locked early.

9th Life Hawai‘ii Free Mass Spay/Neuter

9th Life Hawai‘i, Maui's only non-profit, No-Kill Cat Rescue and Sanctuary, will be offering free mass cat spaying and neutering for feral and companion cats.
Mass spaying/neutering will take place once each month. To make an appointment
