High Surf Continues To Pound Maui Shores

A series of large north and northwesterly swells that have been pounding Maui County shores and driving surfers into a frenzy for the past several weeks is showing no signs of letting up.
On New Year’s Day, a pair of storms to the east of Japan generated 20–30 foot faces on Maui’s north shore. West facing shores caught some of the fringes of the big surf. Since the holidays, fair to good surfing conditions have stayed consistent overall for north and west facing shores.
On Jan. 16, the National Weather Service in Honolulu extended the high surf advisory for north-facing shores of Maui and Molokai‘i. Waves are expected to reach 20–25 feet on north-facing shores Wednesday morning. The advisory will remain in effect until 4 a.m. Weds., Jan. 18. Waves will drop off a little mid-week, but the action is expected to pick back up by the weekend.
