March 15

Business Structures Workshop

“Business Structures Workshop,” will be presented Wednesday, March 15, from noon to 1 p.m. at the Maui County Business Resource Center (MCBRC) located across from IHOP in the Maui Mall. The workshop will illustrate how each business structure has unique characteristics that impact its liability, ownership, control/management, tax treatment, and dissolution. This free workshop explores structural options as well as the advantages and/or disadvantages of each business structure. This course provides an overview of the most popular business types and background on the business registration process. Jayna C. Uyehara, Esq. served a lead attorney and legislative coordinator for the Department of Taxation. In 2005, Uyehara was appointed manager of the State’s DCCA Business Action Center. Ms. Uyehara is on Maui each Wednesday to serve our local community. As seating is limited, reservations are requested and may be made by calling the Maui County Business Resource Center at 873-2847. Attendees are asked to bring their own lunches. MCBRC also offers free business counseling sessions with experienced SCORE counselors that may be arranged by calling MCBRC.

Your County with Mayor Alan Arakawa

The Thursday, Mar. 9 live broadcast of Maui County Mayor Alan Arakawa’s public access television show, "Your County with Mayor Alan Arakawa," will be re-broadcast on AKAKU Channel 53 on Thursday, Mar. 16 at 7 p.m. and again on Friday, Mar. 17 at 8 a.m.
Floyd S. Miyazono, Recreation Program Planner for the Department of Parks & Recreation, Billy Amoral, recreation leader, East District, Tamara Horcajo, Chief of Recreation for the Recreation and Support Division, and Karen Deguilmo, recreation leader for the PALS program, will be his special guests.
The hour-long program will discuss
the County's Youth Recreation Sportsmanship Program, as well as the March 20-24 PALS inter-session, which will focus on a Sports and Culture Day Camp.

Maui Talks TV

Nik-Hil Productions, in association with Harold William Peltz Entertainment, announces the ninetieth edition of MAUI TALKS-TV, a live, public-affairs, call-in talk show, on Akaku: Maui Community Television.
The live broadcast of MAUI TALKS-TV on Tuesday, Mar. 14 will be rebroadcast on Tuesday, Mar. 21 at 7 p.m. on Channel 53, and again the following Wednesday morning, Mar. 22 at 7:15 a.m.
MAUI TALKS-TV is a weekly, one-hour Public Affairs talk show, hosted by Nikhilananda, which is broadcast live every other Tuesday evening. This show is then repeated the following Tuesday evening and again the next Wednesday morning.  Loosely based on “talk-radio”, the format of the show allows viewers to further critique and expound upon assorted items which are affecting our community. While watching the program on the evenings when the show is taped live, viewers are invited, encouraged and welcomed to telephone into the show at 873-3430, [888-577-6240 on Molokai and Lanai] and express their beliefs, concerns, feelings, ideas, opinions, positions and thoughts as to the various issues of the day and what is transpiring in Maui County and the State of Hawai’i.

Marketing Possibilities And Pitfalls Workshop

“Marketing Possibilities & Pitfalls” will be presented on Wednesday, March 22, 12 noon to 1 p.m. at the Maui County Business Resource Center (MCBRC) located across from IHOP in the Maui Mall.The free workshop focuses on effective methods to market products or services, the dos and don’ts of marketing by print and mail, how to avoid costly printing mistakes and how to mail materials for the least postage. Handouts include a project resource sheet and the newest USPS quick service mail guide. Instructor Lia Barrad will share hilarious examples of bad marketing as well as marketing success stories. Barrad, an account executive for Hawaii Publications Inc. (The Haleakala Times, Maui Weekly and Lahaina News), has taught at UCLA and the Los Angeles Direct Marketing Association. Attendees are asked to bring examples of good or bad marketing pieces they have received in the mail or would like reviewed. As seating is limited, reservations are requested and may be made by calling the Maui County Business Resource Center at 873-2847. Attendees are asked to bring their own lunches. Introductory Adult Ki-Aikido Courses

Maui Ki-Aikido will present four adult Introductory Courses on each Tuesday in March from 7–9 p.m. at Tavares Community Center in Pukalani. Taught by Maui Ki-Aikido instructional staff under the direction of Christopher Curtis, 7th dan, Chief Instructor, Hawai‘i Ki Federation. Iraq Vets Speak Out

"Iraq Vets Speak Out" at 7 p.m., Maui Community College Ka Lama 103: Two Iraq veterans (Mike Hoffman and Kelly Dougherty) speak about why they joined the military, false recruitment promises, the psychic legacy of being a combat soldier, what this war is really about, the possibility of democracy in Iraq, and why soldiers fight. Sponsored by Maui Peace Action and the MCC Peace Club.

Make Your Business Look Good

Steve Rose will explain how to “Make Your Business Look Good” on Thursday, March 23, from noon to 1 p.m. at the Maui County Business Resource Center (MCBRC) located across from IHOP in the Maui Mall. First impressions are what it’s all about and logos, business cards, brochures, signage and websites are often businesses' first introduction to their clients. This workshop examines what works and what doesn't in creating a good businesses image across. Steve Rose, V.P. of Marketing at Surfing Goat Dairy, winner of the Mayor’s Small Business Award for “Best Company 2004,” is past Chair of the “Made in Maui” Trade Association and a 30-year marketing veteran. "Starting a Business in Maui County " will be presented on Wednesday, March 29 from noon to 1 p.m. at the West Maui Senior Center in Lahaina. The free workshop will be presented by Small Business Advocate Anna K. Ribucan of the County of Maui Office of Economic Development. This seminar covers general information and requirements for starting a business in Maui County. Handouts, websites and other helpful information included. Volunteer in Haleakala Crater

Volunteer in Haleakala Crater Friday through Monday (or optionally Sunday), and stay at Holua Cabin. Participants will remove invasive species and weed and trim nene habitat.There will be time for relaxation and photography or exploring. Safe Water Fair

Hawai‘i's first Safe Water Fair will take place on Sunday, April 30 from 9 am - 4 pm at Hannibal Tavares Center. The Upcountry Oversight & Advisory Committee for the EPA Grant to study Lead and Other Contaminants in the upcountry water supply, along with the Department of Water, Department of Health and the County Of Maui will host the event. Residents will be encouraged to bring their families and learn about how to keep their home and business water systems safe and clean. The free Fair is designed to be fun and informative, with entertainment, food and lots of activities for the keiki. Upcountry Maui's Safe Water Fair is designed for you to help raise safe water awareness and begin an education process for families living in the Upcountry area from Haiku through Makawao, Pukalani, Kula and Ulupalakua. Maui Matsuri Karaoke Contest

Maui Matsuri will hold its inaugural Japanese Karaoke Contest at the Baldwin High School Auditorium in Wailuku on Friday, May 19, at 6:30 p.m., the evening preceding the 6th Annual Maui Matsuri, a Japanese Festival.
Singers throughout Hawai`i are eligible to compete in the following divisions: Youth (up to age 17); Adult (18 to 59); and Senior (60 & above). Contestants must submit a completed entry form, a $10 check payable to the Japanese Cultural Society of Maui, and a cassette tape or CD of the contestant’s performance no later than March 17, 2006. The preliminary competition, which will be based on the contestant’s recorded performance, will determine the actual contestants to compete in the Maui Matsuri Japanese Karaoke Contest on Maui on May 19.
The overall grand prize winner will receive a trophy and $750 gift certificate for a roundtrip ticket to Japan. First place division winners will each receive a trophy.
The May 19 event will also highlight taiko and Japanese dance performances, as well as Japanese singing by the Karaoke Contest's Head Judge Junichi Araki of California. Araki is a Japanese karaoke singing instructor and a producer of Japanese karaoke shows in Southern California.
