Five Ways to Build a Referral Business

“Five Ways to Build a Referral Business” will be presented by personal and professional life coach Susan Kim Wed nesday, April 12, from noon to 1 p.m. at the Maui County Business Resource Center (MCBRC) located across from IHOP in the Maui Mall. Attendees will learn how to grow their businesses by referral. This interactive workshop will help businesses refine their "refer-ability." Ms. Kim holds a master's degree in communication. As seating is limited, reservations are requested and may be made by calling the Maui County Business Resource Center at 873-2847. Attendees are asked to bring their own lunches. MCBRC also offers free business counseling sessions with experienced SCORE counselors that may be arranged by calling MCBRC.

Blogs - Take the Discussion Online

“Blogs - Take the Discussion Online” will be presented Friday, April 14 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Maui County Business Resource Center (MCBRC) located across from IHOP in the Maui Mall. Blogs, podcasting and other leading edge Internet technologies offer new ways for a business to communicate directly with customers and build relationships around the world. Exploring them with instructor Scott Waters' four -part series on websites and web server training presents a unique opportunity for new and existing businesses. Waters has been a field marketing manager and consultant to Apple Computer and has worked with software companies and educational institutions. Since moving to Maui he has been a Macintosh consultant, commercial artist, webmaster as well as a private small business consultant. All classes will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Cost per class is $15 per class. As seating is limited, reservations are requested and may be made by calling the Maui County Business Resource Center at 873-2847. Attendees are asked to bring their own lunches.

Kiwanis Club of South Maui

The Kiwanis Club of South Maui meets at 7:30 a.m. every Friday morning at Stella Blue’s Restaurant in Azeka Shopping Center on South Kihei Road. Plenty of parking, breakfast is available and admission is free.

Earth Day Celebration

Sierra Club Maui invites the community to a multi-media Earth Day Celebration in honor of Sierra Club founder John Muir's 168th birthday. The free event will be held Tuesday evening April 18th beginning at 6pm at the Maui Community College campus Science Lecture Hall. The event's theme is "Protecting Our Sacred Lands" and it will feature a panel discussion on that subject with Leiohu Ryder and other invited Hawaiian cultural experts. At 7 p.m. there will be free birthday cake and ice cream and the film "Monumental -The Life and Times of David Brower." David Brower, who dedicated his life to protecting some of America's most sacred places, was the executive director of the National Sierra Club and is credited with turning the Sierra Club into the national organization that it is today. When he first joined the Sierra Club, it was basically just a hiking club. He is living proof that one person can make a big difference. At 8:15 p.m. there will be live music for all to enjoy!! Maui Talks TV

Nik-Hil Productions, in association with Harold William Peltz Entertainment, announces the ninetieth edition of MAUI TALKS-TV, a live, public-affairs, call-in talk show, on Akaku: Maui Community Television.
The live broadcast of MAUI TALKS-TV on Tuesday, April 11 will be rebroadcast on Tuesday, April 18 at 7 p.m. on Channel 53, and again the following Wednesday morning, April 19 at 7:15 a.m.
MAUI TALKS-TV is a weekly, one-hour Public Affairs talk show, hosted by Nikhilananda, which is broadcast live every other Tuesday evening. This show is then repeated the following Tuesday evening and again the next Wednesday morning.  Loosely based on “talk-radio”, the format of the show allows viewers to further critique and expound upon assorted items which are affecting our community. While watching the program on the evenings when the show is taped live, viewers are invited, encouraged and welcomed to telephone into the show at 873-3430, [888-577-6240 on Molokai and Lanai] and express their beliefs, concerns, feelings, ideas, opinions, positions and thoughts as to the various issues of the day and what is transpiring in Maui County and the State of Hawai’i.

See the Forest From The Tallest Tree

SCORE counselors Richard Kehoe and Brian Thomas invite the public to a "See the Forest from the Tallest Tree" talk-story on Wednesday, April 19 from noon to 1 p.m at the Maui County Business Resource Center (MCBRC) located across from IHOP in the Maui Mall. Attendees will explore current strategies for keeping focused and using time efficiently to grow a business and increase personal wealth with SCORE experts Richard Kehoe and Biran Thomas. Kehoe, and MBA and CPA owns and operates his own accounting and tax business; Thomas is an independent investment manager, registered investment advisor, and registered representative with more than seven years experience helping small business on Maui. . Negotiating a Commercial Lease

"Negotiating a Commercial Lease" will be presented Wednesday, April 25, from noon to 1 p.m. at the Maui County Business Resource Center (MCBRC) located across from IHOP in the Maui Mall. Commercial leasing - whether it be a first location, renewing an existing lease, or purchasing a business with a lease assignment - understanding the lease and a businessperson's rights and responsibilities may make the difference between success and failure. Learn how to use the services of commercial real estate brokers and reap the benefit of their knowledge of markets and negotiating. Instructor Cindy Greenwell has been a commercial realtor on Maui since 2002. She has negotiated leases both on behalf of tenants and landlords and understands negotiations from both sides. "Loan Blitz" Workshop for Women, Veterans and Minorities

The U.S. Small Business Administration's guaranteed Community Express "Loan Blitz" Workshop for Women, Veterans and Minorities will be held on Wednesday, April 26, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at MEO Classroom #2. SBA has developed a loan program to provide financial assistance, capital access, and technical and management assistance to underserved segments of Hawaii's small business community. Offered in collaboration with the Maui County Business Resource Center, MEO Business Development Corp., Bank of Hawaii and Central Pacific Bank, this application workshop will walk attendees through a step-by-step process on how to complete the community express loan application. Loans are available from $5,000 to $250,000. Technical assistance providers Anna K. Ribucan of MCBRC, David Fisher with SBDC and Susie Thieman of MEO will be available to assist with loan packages. This workshop is co-sponsored and hosted by MEO Business Development Corp., 99 Mahalani Street, Wailuku.

Safe Water Fair

Hawai‘i's first Safe Water Fair will take place on Sunday, April 30 from 9 am - 4 pm at Hannibal Tavares Center. The Upcountry Oversight & Advisory Committee for the EPA Grant to study Lead and Other Contaminants in the upcountry water supply, along with the Department of Water, Department of Health and the County Of Maui will host the event. Residents will be encouraged to bring their families and learn about how to keep their home and business water systems safe and clean. The free Fair is designed to be fun and informative, with entertainment, food and lots of activities for the keiki. Upcountry Maui's Safe Water Fair is designed for you to help raise safe water awareness and begin an education process for families living in the Upcountry area from Haiku through Makawao, Pukalani, Kula and Ulupalakua. Maui Matsuri Karaoke Contest

Maui Matsuri will hold its inaugural Japanese Karaoke Contest at the Baldwin High School Auditorium in Wailuku on Friday, May 19, at 6:30 p.m., the evening preceding the 6th Annual Maui Matsuri, a Japanese Festival.
Singers throughout Hawai`i are eligible to compete in the following divisions: Youth (up to age 17); Adult (18 to 59); and Senior (60 & above). Contestants must submit a completed entry form, a $10 check payable to the Japanese Cultural Society of Maui, and a cassette tape or CD of the contestant’s performance no later than March 17, 2006. The preliminary competition, which will be based on the contestant’s recorded performance, will determine the actual contestants to compete in the Maui Matsuri Japanese Karaoke Contest on Maui on May 19.
The overall grand prize winner will receive a trophy and $750 gift certificate for a roundtrip ticket to Japan. First place division winners will each receive a trophy.
The May 19 event will also highlight taiko and Japanese dance performances, as well as Japanese singing by the Karaoke Contest's Head Judge Junichi Araki of California. Araki is a Japanese karaoke singing instructor and a producer of Japanese karaoke shows in Southern California.
