Down And Enjoy The Moment…
Why are the
values of the Mainland creeping into everyday Maui life?
Road rage, traffic, and the lack of courtesy on the road is just
a few of the things that bug me…
I understand why visitors are in a hurry to get to the airport –
they want to enjoy every moment of their precious holiday in Paradise.
Not that I can justify when these same people who help support the
very lifestyle that many of us enjoy are hanging on my rear bumper.
I usually pull over and let the speed jockey pass me and I chuckle
inside and think to myself, “What is the rush?”
We all have had someone hog the road, and I am amazed to see how
Mainlanders drive! Do they drive in their own towns and villages
with so much disrespect for their neighbors? The visitor only gets
to dream and wish they could find a way of staying in Maui. Not
that I want any more population; fearing that the new-comers will
bring different values and the spirit of Aloha will disappear. The
rushing and hurrying of people is also very irritating when there
are so many natural wonders, i.e., rainbows, waterfalls, majestic
Haleakala, whales breaching and the stunning sea which surrounds
our dot of land in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.
I enjoy driving Upcountry in the early morning light and seeing
a pair of handsome horses galloping in a lush green field with Molokini
in the background. That is one of the things that makes me smile
and I forget about the S.O.B. tailgating me while I enjoy the wonders
of our special place we call home.
I do not support the bumper sticker that tells our visitors to go
back where they come from, but I would like for them to slow down
a bit and observe our special piece of Nirvana.

Where's The Environmentalists?
Dain Kane's
"water-availability" bill and other Oahu bills are being
reported in The Advertiser, Maui News, The Maui Weekly, Environment
Today (allegedly), and other local papers.
However, what no one is seeing just yet is this: Where's the
Maui environmental groups? Their silence on Kane's bills (four
bills which are part of this water-related legislative package)
is bewildering to many as environmental heavy-weights from Oahu
(Jeff Mikulina, Sierra Club (Hawai‘i); D. Kapua Sproat and
Isaac Moriwake, EarthJustice; Jonathan Scheuer, OHA; and others)
are calling the bills "visionary" and "landmark".
Jeff Mikulina's press release stated that he hoped that Maui's legislation
will serve as a model for the rest of the state.
So, the question is: Where are the Maui Environmental groups?
Are they being exposed as equally "political" as their
counter-parts - the developers?

Tied In With CIA?
My hat's off
to you for providing the public with an alternative to gather information
about their world. That’s very commendable. If I remember
right, I flew on Pacific Wings when I left Maui. The pilots were
cool. It doesn’t surprise me that Wackenhut guys can behave
as if they’re beyond the law. Somewhere along the way I learned
that Wackenhut is a front company for the CIA. Wackenhut provides
the security for Area 51 in Nevada.
Isn’t that strange? Why would a government military facility
needs to hire a private company to provide security? Doesn’t
the military have security guards of their own? Oh yeah, that’s
because according to the government Area 51 doesn’t exist.
Makes me wonder what kind of shady things might be occurring at
the Kahului airport or on Maui that Wackenhut needs to be there.
I’ll be reading The Examiner in the future for sure.
Keep up the good work.

Shocked and Appalled
I am truly shocked and
appalled at the behavior of our airport security personnel. Are
they really keeping us safe, or are they terrorizing employees and
travelers alike?
I am the last person to advocate a lawsuit but I honestly hope that
the management team at Pacific Wings sue Robert “Butchie”
Tam Ho, Wakenhut Security Co., and those running the airport. Not
just at the local level because that is useless but at the federal
level.
The fact that Mr. Tam Ho was not arrested for his “alleged”
assault shows deference to himself by the MPD, which reflects even
poorly on all of them. I’m not sure why they say “alleged”
since you can look at Kahlstorf and Goshorn to see their injuries.
The argument that they were resisting a citizen’s arrest and
warranted a beating rings hollow. Does this mean I can make a citizen’s
arrest, beat someone, hold them indefinitely, and I won’t
be charged? I don’t think so.
This is just another sign of the old boys network at the Maui Police
Department taking care of their own, forgetting the rest of us,
and the local race-based conflict that no one wants to acknowledge.
